AC short cycling: why it starts and stops constantly

A cooling system that runs for three minutes, stops, and starts again shortly after is wearing itself out. Short cycling is hard on the compressor and it almost never removes humidity properly.

Answer

Is this an emergency or can it wait?

Short cycling means the system starts and stops before completing a proper cycle, usually from an oversized unit, a thermostat problem, restricted airflow or low refrigerant charge. Call (855) 321-3194 and we connect you with a local provider.

What you are seeing

Cycling symptoms

  • Cycles lasting under five minutes
  • The compressor starts then stops quickly
  • The house feels cold and clammy at the same time
  • The breaker occasionally trips during a start

Contributing conditions

  • The thermostat is in direct sun or near a vent
  • The filter is heavily loaded
  • The system was recently replaced with a larger one
  • Ice has appeared on the coil or line set

Do and do not

DoDo not
Time the cycles and note the lengthKeep adjusting the setpoint to interrupt the pattern
Check the thermostat is not in sun or near a registerAssume frequent cycling means the system is efficient
Replace a loaded filterIgnore a breaker that trips during start-up
Ask whether the unit was correctly sizedReplace with an even larger system
Shut it off if the compressor is struggling to startLet a compressor repeatedly attempt to start

What causes it, ranked by how often

  1. Oversized equipment. A system too large for the house satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes, shuts off, and repeats. It never runs long enough to dehumidify, which is why the house feels cold and damp.
  2. Thermostat placement or fault. A control in direct sun or near a supply register reads a false temperature, satisfies early, then calls again once the real room temperature reasserts itself.
  3. Restricted airflow. A blocked filter or coil causes the system to trip on a safety, shut down, cool off and restart.
  4. Low refrigerant charge. Low charge trips the low-pressure safety, which cuts the compressor out and allows it to restart once pressure equalises.
  5. Failing compressor or capacitor. A compressor tripping on thermal overload restarts once it cools, producing a cycling pattern with long off periods.
  6. Electrical fault. A loose connection or failing contactor that intermittently breaks the circuit mid-cycle.

How a technician diagnoses it

  1. Time the cycles precisely

Cycle length and the off period between them distinguish oversizing from a safety trip.

  2. Check the thermostat location and calibration

Ruled out quickly and explains a meaningful share of these calls.

  3. Measure airflow and charge

Static pressure, filter state, superheat and subcooling together separate airflow from refrigerant.

  4. Test the electrical path

Capacitor value, contactor condition and compressor amp draw during a start attempt.

When to shut the system off

  • The compressor hums or struggles on each start attempt.
  • The breaker trips during the start sequence.
  • Ice has formed on the coil or line set.
  • There is a burning smell during the cycling.

Call now

  • No cool air during a heat advisory
  • No heat with outdoor temperatures below freezing
  • Burning smell from the vents
  • Water pooling at the air handler
  • Ice on the line set
  • Breaker tripping on every cycle

Shut it off and call the utility or 911 first

  • You smell gas: leave the building, then call the gas utility or 911
  • Smoke or sparking at the equipment
  • A carbon monoxide alarm is sounding: leave and call 911

Questions

AC short cycling questions

How short is short cycling?

A healthy cooling system typically runs ten to twenty minutes per cycle in moderate weather and much longer on hot days. Cycles consistently under five minutes indicate a problem worth investigating.

Is short cycling bad for the system?

Yes. Starting draws far more current than running, so frequent starts put disproportionate wear on the compressor and contactor. It also prevents the system from removing humidity, so comfort suffers alongside reliability.

Can an oversized AC cause this?

It is one of the most common causes. An oversized unit cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has dehumidified anything. The result is a house that is cold and clammy at once.

Could the thermostat be the problem?

Yes. A thermostat in direct sunlight, above a heat source or in the path of a supply register reads a temperature the room is not actually at, so it satisfies early and then calls again moments later.

Does short cycling mean low refrigerant?

It can. Low charge trips the low-pressure safety, which cuts the compressor and lets it restart once pressure equalises. That produces a distinctive pattern a technician recognises from the cycle timing.

What does it cost to fix?

Airflow correction runs a figure the provider confirms on site and a thermostat a figure the provider confirms on site. A capacitor is a figure the provider confirms on site and refrigerant leak repair a figure the provider confirms on site. Correcting genuine oversizing means replacement.
